About ISTA

The Illinois Science Teachers Association (ISTA) is committed to promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all. ISTA's current membership of more than 2,200 includes science teachers, science supervisors, administrators, scientists, business and industry representatives, and others involved in science education.

ISTA conducts State and regional conventions that attract more than 2,000 attendees annually. ISTA provides many programs and services for science educators, including awards and professional development workshops. The Association serves as an advocate for science educators by keeping its members and the general public informed about Illinois issues and trends in science education.

Greetings Fellow Teachers of Science!

I’d like to welcome everyone to the website of the Illinois Science Teachers Association! We’re delighted you are here and I invite you to browse through what we have to offer. ISTA has a great peer-reviewed journal, the Spectrum. Every fall we hold our annual conference where members can network with others around the state, attend great sessions, present a session or two, and relax and socialize at our Friday evening event. We have a listserve through which our members can network electronically with each other by spreading great ideas, asking for advice or lessons on particular topics, or making announcements of professional development opportunities. ISTA also regularly offers the opportunity to win teaching awards.

The strength of any organization, including ours, depends on the members taking an active role. Contact your regional directors (there are two from every region in the state) with questions, concerns, or ideas. They’d love to hear from you. Why not run for an office yourself? You could also help by volunteering to be on a conference committee. We have other standing committees and some ad hoc ones as well. You’ll see those listed on our website. It is important to continue with professional development throughout your teaching career. Our members range from pre-school teachers through college professors. You’ll find a membership application on this website. Let ISTA help you grow professionally—join us!

Sincerely,

Jill Carter, President
