[ISTATALK-L] textbook question
Hello-
My name is Kathryn Wolf and I am a highschool teacher at Wheaton North
High School. I am also a member of EEAI and NABT. This year we are
adopting a new book for our environmental biology course, and are
looking for a text that is not AP and has a intermediate reading level
for juniors and seniors. Our course is made up of a combination of
field work (land and water) during the first semester, and more
general/global issues during the second semester. We might even be
interested in a general ecology text, with supplemental field activities
from another source. I currently have my students adopt a site around a
local lake, and then collect and identify the plants, chemically test
the water, biologically collect in the lake (macro benthic, planktonic
and fish), and also do some soil activities. The students create a
portfolio of the biodiversity of their site, and submit a restoration
plan for the park as their final project. Second semester we look at
more general/global issues such as biodiversity, population, etc. We
also do some animal tracking with the snow, streams when the weather
gets better and the spring bird migration. I would be excited to hear
of any texts out there both regular or field based that might work well
with our program. We currently use the Miller, Living in the
Environment which is too difficult to read for our students (we have
made our course intermediate instead of AP), and does not include field
work or any ancillary materials. Please feel free to forward this email
to anyone who might have additional expertise on what is out there. I
would also be interested in any sites that have evaluated the materials
that are available on the market today. Thank you in advance for your
time!
