[ISTATALK-L] TL Mounts Lecture Peoria



Could Caves be Cooling the Atmosphere?
The TL Mounts Lecture Series has brought many notable scientists to Peoria.
Previous lectures have been given by Stephen Jay Gould, Richard Leakey,
Harrison Schmitt, and James Kaler.  This year's lecturer is geologist Dr. Chris
Groves.  Mark you calendar.

Dr. Groves is director of the Hoffman Environmental Research Institute at
Western Kentucky University. He received the Phillip Francis Dupont Fellowship
at the University of Virginia, earning a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences there in
1993. With his students and colleagues he since has developed an active
research program in the geochemistry, hydrogeology, and evolution of caves
and karst landscapes, as well as global issues of water supply and
environmental health. Much of this work is focused in and around Kentucky's
Mammoth Cave System, the world's most extensive known cave. Groves also
has collaborative water research projects underway in California, Alaska,
China, and Vietnam. He is a member of the China Environmental Forum at the
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C., a co-
project leader of the United Nations scientific program World Correlation of
Karst Geology and Relevant Ecosystems, and recently was elected president of
the Cave Research Foundation.
