[ISTATALK-L] PROJECT INQUIRE
DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 10, 2004!
Please distribute this information to all math and science teachers in grades 4-
12 in Area III.

Project:INQUIRE (see below).
Project: INQUIRE is a collaborative effort of Area III Regional Offices of
Education, universities, businesses,
and school districts. It is designed to meet the needs of mathematics and
science teachers in grades 4-12. Grant
activities for 2005-06 will focus on investigating the following questions.
How does participation in Lesson Study, Inquiry, and Instructor Practicum
impact teacher
content knowledge and increase student achievement?
Does collaboration with peers via Lesson Study enhance instruction?
? Lesson Study Training ? understanding the concept and application of lesson
study.
? Lesson Study- working with the Collaborative Team and Coach to reflect on a
lesson?s impact on
student achievement and disposition.
Does observing and interacting with real-world application of the math and
science curriculum increase
teacher knowledge and skills?
? Instructor Practicum ? job shadowing a business for 3 days.
? Content Mentoring ? working with a content expert in the area of mathematics,
science, or
engineering.
Does using inquiry in unit development increase student engagement in the
learning process?
? Inquiry Training ? understanding and utilizing the Inquiry Model for unit
development and building
an environment that encourages student questioning.
? Unit Development ? working with colleagues to develop a unit based on
Instructor Practicum
experience.
As a result of these experiences, teachers will: be able to create ?authentic?
learning opportunities in
mathematics, science, or engineering for their classrooms, have access to on-
line experts to support their studies,
and utilize questioning strategies that engage students and require higher level
thinking.
