[ISTATALK-L] IDNR ENTICE Workshops
Openings Still Available for Upcoming ENTICE Workshops
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources still has openings for the
following ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for
Conservation Education) workshops. These FREE workshops provide
supplemental educational materials and Continuing Professional
Development Units. A registration form may be downloaded at the

Winter 2005
"Illinois' Geological Resources"
Illinois State Geological Survey, Urbana
January 28, 2005, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Join scientists from the Illinois State Geological Survey as they
enlighten us about the physical features of Illinois. Targeted to
educators of grades 7- 12, this workshop will include discussions
about
such topics as plate tectonics and using rock sequences and fossils to
interpret changes in the earth. Free supplemental educational
materials
will be provided.
"Illinois Birds"
Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
February 26, 2005, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Do you teach about birds? If so, you'll want to attend this workshop.
Educators of grades four through six will learn general information
about Illinois bird species, including their life history and roles in
the ecosystem. Identification skills discussed will be put into
practice
on the bird observation hike (weather permitting). A large variety of
classroom materials and resources will be provided.
Spring 2005
"Illinois' Urban Wildlife"
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Chicago
April 2, 2005, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Wildlife is all around us, even in downtown Chicago! Educators of
grades four through six are invited to participate as we learn where
to
look for urban wildlife, what you can expect to find, how to identify
species and how to improve urban wildlife habitat at your school.
Natural resources professionals and educators will instruct about
these
topics and more, including how species adapt to the urban environment,
how humans affect urban wildlife, and control of nuisance species.
Receive supplemental educational materials to enhance your
teaching.
"Biodiversity 101"
Rock Springs Nature Center, Decatur
April 18, 2005, time to be determined
This introduction to Illinois' natural resources is designed for
educators of grades kindergarten through six. Discover Illinois'
biodiversity and trace its natural progression through time.
Participants explore aquatic, woodland and prairie ecosystems while
learning how to bring nature into the classroom. Classroom-ready
materials will be provided.
"Illinois' Aquatic Resources: Lake Shelbyville"
Lake Shelbyville Visitors' Center, Shelbyville
April 20. 2005, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Educators of grades four through six are invited to learn about the
ecology of Lake Shelbyville. Natural resources experts will conduct
the
workshop in classrooms both on shore and in boats. We'll take a cruise
on Lake Shelbyville to search for species first-hand. Find out about
the
natural web of life in the lake. Receive supplemental educational
materials to incorporate with your students.
"Illinois Mammals"
Wildwood Girl Scout Camp, Mt. Sterling

Resource professionals and educators will provide a general
introduction to the mammals of Illinois as well as a look at the
effect
furbearing mammals had on the settlement and history of the state. This
hands-on workshop is targeted for educators of grades four through six.
Classroom-ready materials will be provided.
"Lake Michigan Ecology"
Navy Pier, Chicago
May 6, 2005, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Come aboard with other educators of grades four through six to learn
about the ecology of Lake Michigan. Natural resources experts will
conduct the workshop in classrooms both on shore and in a boat. We'll

Summer 2005
"Illinois River Ecology"
Public Boat Launch, Havana
June 16, 2005, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The Illinois River will be used as an ecological laboratory in this
workshop. Educators of grades four through six are invited to
participate and learn about the river and its inhabitants from natural
resources professionals. We'll spend time on shore and in boats
exploring this fascinating habitat. Classroom-ready materials will be
provided.
"Schoolyard Habitat Development"
Freeburg Elementary School, Freeburg
June 9, 2005, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
How's your habitat? Join us for this session devoted to presenting
ideas to help you and your students take action to improve wildlife
habitat on your school grounds. Educators of grades kindergarten
through 12 will be shown examples of current schoolyard habitat sites
and work with resource professionals to learn basic habitat design,
development and maintenance techniques. Become aware of grant
opportunities and obtain free supplemental materials to help you get
started with your own schoolyard habitat development.

June 22, 2005, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Educators of grades kindergarten through six are invited to
investigate
insects! We'll spend the day learning about insects: what they are;
their characteristics; where they live; how to identify some common
insects; why they are so successful; and more! Weather-permitting,
we'll take a short hike to find some insects in the wild.
Classroom-ready materials will be provided.
"Native Americans and Nature"
Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
June 22, 2005, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Learn about Native American peoples and how they used environmental
resources in this interactive workshop. Targeted to educators of grades
four through six, hands-on activities and classroom-ready materials will
be provided. Workshop materials are relevant to Native American history
throughout the state.
