SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR GRADUATING SENIORS:

The Honorable Governor of West Virginia has extended the invitation for all states’ governors to open the process to select delegates to the National Youth Science Camp (NYSC).  This exceptional opportunity is a four-week, all-expense paid program that will take place between June 30 and July 25, 2005.  Scientists from across the nation who work on some of the most provocative topics in science today present lectures and hands-on science seminars and linger to interact informally with student delegates.  Delegates are challenged to explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art, and music with resident staff members.  They also may present seminars covering their own areas of interest and research.  The delegates visit Washington D.C. to take advantage of some of the nation's premier scientific, governmental, and cultural facilities.  The four-week experience includes three overnight expeditions into the Monongahela National Forest featuring backpacking, rock-climbing, caving, mountain-biking, or kayaking opportunities.

The Illinois State Board of Education, through the Curriculum and Instruction Division, is coordinating the announcement, application and selection process for the program.  Please recommend this program to seniors who could be qualified and interested through your district’s channels of counselors, science departments and academic honor societies.  More information about the program can be accessed through the web site: www.sciencecamp.org.  Applications are due February 18.  Please contact Gwen Pollock at gpollock@xxxxxxxx for electronic copies of the application materials.  If you need hard copies of the materials, please call 217/557-7323 for assistance.

(Delegates are required to participate in the camp program for its entirety as the fast-paced activities in the remote location make coming and going very difficult.)
