Northern Illinois University Department of Physics Announces the2005 NIU Physics OlympicsSaturday, April 16,
2005
8:30 am- 3:30 pmBring your physics students in teams of 4-5 to compete with other high school physics students in hands-on laboratory problem solving and a quiz bowl competition. Challenges are designed to be accomplished by students with a minimal exposure to high school physics. The quiz bowl questions difficulty level will range from moderate to challenging. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams and individuals in the various events and teams with the best overall scores. The day will include time to tour some of our on-campus research facilities and the final awards presentation will include some spectacular physics demonstrations.Challenges, prizes, a schedule and rules will be posted online at www.physics.niu.edu/~frontier/olympics/physics_olympics_s05.html . Challenges include a bridge building competition which will require the teams to construct a paper bridge solely from copy paper and transparent tape that will span 30 cm. The goal is to design and build the lightest bridge supporting the greatest weight. The winning bridge will be the bridge with the greatest ratio: mass supported by the bridge/mass of the bridge. The bridge needs to be constructed prior to the event. All other challenges will be completed entirely during the event. Check online for the complete rules for the bridge building competition and the other events, which include building a tall, free-standing structure from spaghetti and a secret connector, constructing an electromagnet from given materials, using vectors to quickly disarm a "bomb", constructing an optical device with given materials, and a few surprises. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Physics and Faraday Physics Club. For more information contact Pati Sievert, Outreach Coordinator at sievert@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or by phone 815-753-6418. RegistrationRegistration will be limited to 24 teams. There is a limit of 3 teams from a single school. Schools wishing to register more than 3 teams should contact Pati Sievert, as they will be allowed to do so after April 1, if space permits. Substitutions will be allowed on the day of the competition until 8:45 am.Registration deadlines: Early Registration is encouraged by March 25, 2005. NO FEE Late Registration will be accepted until April 6, 2005. Late registration fee of $20.00 per team. Please make checks payable to Faraday Physics Club. Registration forms LunchThere will be a lunch break at noon. The Physics Club will be serving a Pizza Lunch for $5.00/person. This will include 2 large slices of pizza (cheese, pepperoni, or sausage), your choice of pop or bottled water, a piece of fruit, and a chance to chat with some physics undergraduate and graduate students. Pizza Lunch orders need to be received in the Physics Department and paid for by April 12, 2005. (You may register early and order your lunches later if you choose.)
