This four-week Teachers-As-Investigators program is designed to renew and
revitalize science teachers. Research problems will be constructed by
participant teams in the area of environmental chemistry where soil and water
sampling and analysis are typically performed. The teachers will learn how to apply
advanced instrumental techniques to their studies. Calculator-based Learning (CBL) will be
introduced and may offer useful transfer for student activities. In addition, participants will take
tours and hear
Teachers will develop an educational module that mirrors authentic inquiry, includes the collection and analysis of quantitative data, and provides a suite of lessons and activities.
At the mid-point and conclusion of the summer program, teams will present their research and apply to the Department of Energy for mini-grants to support their educational modules with the purchase of their own laboratory equipment and materials. Two follow-up sessions will be scheduled during the academic year to extend and expand the summer experience, to share feedback, and to prepare for the next round of summer projects.
A
three-year commitment is required by the Department of
Energy.
