STEM Education Programs Affected by President's Budget Proposal

> > On February 7th the Administration presented its budget proposal to

> > While the overall budget at the Department of Education is down slightly from
> > $56.9 Billion in Fiscal Year 2005 to $56 Billion in the FY 2006 request,

Here are some highlights:
* The budget proposal increases Title II Part B Math and Science Partnerships
> > to $269 million but restricts $120 million to competitive grants
> > administered by the Department of Education for secondary education
> > mathematics initiatives.
> > * Vocational and Adult Education, including the Tech-Prep Education State
> > Grants and the Tech-Prep Demonstration program, is eliminated in the budget
> > proposal.  The $1.3 Billion in funding is being shifted to create the High
> > School Initiative.
> > * The National Science Foundation Education and Human Resources (EHR) 
> > Budget was also cut significantly in the 2006 Budget Proposal.
> > *Overall the EHR budget sustains a 12.4% reduction.  The Elementary,
> > Secondary and Informal Education (ESIE) budget is reduced by more than 
> > 22%, the NSF Math and Science Partnerships are cut to $60 million (a 
> > nearly 25% reduction), and the Research, Evaluation and Communication 
> > (REC) budget is cut by more than $25 million or 43%.  The full NSF 2006
