[ISTATALK-L] social / ethical / moral issues in science classrooms

Dear all science teachers

I desperately need your help.
My name is Hyunju Lee, a doctoral student studying science
education at UIUC. In fact, I am sorry that this is third
reminder to recruit teachers for my dissertation. I
advertised this through ISTA and NSTA, and other
connections, but not many teachers responded to me.

I am doing case studies of a small number (may be four)
secondary science teachers who out of their own initiative
are addressing social/moral/ethical issues regarding science
and technology development in their classes. Such issues
include human cloning, animal experimentation and testing,
environmental issues, GMO, energy issues, nuclear power
plants, or community related issues stemming from over-
developments, and so on.

This study would involve in-depth interviews with the
teacher regarding his/her philosophy, what motivated him/her
to do socio-scientific issues, how s/he got into doing this,
etc., and some audio-taping (and video-taping if possible)
of classroom work. The emphasis would be on the the
interviews.

Are you planning to address some of the issues during the
rest of this semester? Or do you know somebody who are doing
this in their classes? Please email me at hlee25@xxxxxxxxx

I would appreciate any kind of help.
Thanks.

Sincerely,
Hyunju Lee
