[ISTATALK-L] FW: Save the Dates, You're Invited!
Here is another opportunity for you to consider. The ISTA list serve
does not support my attaching the mentioned brochure---let me know if
you're interested. I copied the letter below this initial announcement
Dear Colleagues,
It's not too late to apply for participation in the 2005 National LASER
K-8 Science Education Strategic Planning Institute, hosted by the
National Science Resources Center. Apply early (by April 22, 2005) and
your team will qualify for a special, reduced fee. Space is limited-
apply late and you may miss out on this important opportunity.
This institute is designed to guide school districts and science reform
projects in the process of establishing programs that result in improved
science instruction and achievement for all students.
Attached to this message is a letter of invitation and a brochure
describing the event and the process for applying. HP is offering a
limited number of grants to cover registration fees for districts in
which at least 50% of the students are eligible for free or reduced
price lunch.
We are excited about working, nationally and internationally, with
another cohort of science leaders to offer this K 8 Science Education
Strategic Planning Institute. We hope that you will consider attending
and/or sending this information to districts you may be in contact with
who are ready to look systematically at their K 8 science program and
plan implementation of a research based, inquiry centered curriculum.

Dear Colleague:
The National Science Resources Center (NSRC), a non-profit organization
of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academies, is conducting
a National LASER K-8 Science Education Strategic Planning Institute,
July 17-22, 2005, in Washington, D.C.
This opportunity is being made available to school districts and science
reform projects through the NSRC's Leadership and Assistance for
Science Education Reform (LASER) Center. The LASER Center was created by
the NSRC, and originally funded by NSF, to assist the nation's school
districts in initiating, implementing, and institutionalizing
research-based, inquiry-centered science education programs. This
Institute is designed to guide school districts in the process of
establishing programs that result in improved science instruction and
achievement for all students.
The Institute will include a six-day program of interactive workshops
and discussions where school district teams will:
* Explore their vision for teaching and learning science
* Engage in a first-hand experience with inquiry-centered science
* Construct models for developing and sustaining a corps of
leaders who will champion science education reform in the district
* Focus on five elements for implementing an effective
science education program:
(a) Adopting an age-appropriate, inquiry-centered curriculum
(b) providing professional development
(c) developing a materials support system
(d) utilizing appropriate assessment methods
(e) engaging administrative and community support
* Collaborate with state and national experts and members of other
teams to develop strategic plans to build an infrastructure to reform
K-8 science
