The new and improved ninth edition of "Forest Trees of Illinois" is now
available, and is the first significant revision since this immensely
popular book was originally released in 1973.
A useful tool for nature enthusiasts, landowners, the scientific
community and school children, the book contains detailed descriptions
of 280 native or naturalized species found in the Prairie State.
Included for each species are illustrations of leaves and twigs, a
photograph of the bark and an Illinois range map. The accompanying text
provides up-to-date information on common and scientific names and
descriptions of growth form, bark, leaves, flowers, fruit, wood, uses,
habitat, range and distinguishing features. Included in this edition are
three species recently verified as native to Illinois-Nuttall oak,
Balsam poplar and yellow buckeye. Additional pages provide the reader
with information on places to study trees, how to nominate an Illinois
Big Tree Champion, the youth Arbor Day poster contest and contacting
Department of Natural Resources district foresters.
