Here is an opportunity that may be possible for you.
IF you have plans to go to Salt Lake City for the regional meeting,
please let me know.
Middle School Science Teachers: Focus Group Invitation, NSTA Salt Lake
City
The Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA), in partnership with
the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Project
2061, has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop
a reviewed "library" of web-based science instructional items for middle
school science teachers that will be a part of a collection called
PRISMS (Phenomena and Representations for Instruction of Science in
Middle School) in the National Science Digital Library (NSDL). These
items will be reviewed for their accuracy in explaining or representing
ideas as well as their alignment to content standards and
appropriateness as informed by cognitive research.
In order to learn more about the ideas middle school students struggle
with and the types of phenomena and representations teachers would find
useful in their teaching of middle school science topics, the PRISMS
Project will convene a focus group comprised of fifteen Grade 5 - 9
classroom teachers (or educators who work directly with middle school
science teachers) at the upcoming NSTA Area Conference in Salt Lake
City:
Thursday, December 7, 2005; 4:00 - 4:45 pm
Alta Room, Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown
The purpose of this 45-minute session will be to discuss the concepts
that middle school students frequently struggle with and the needs of
teachers in addressing these concepts. Your input will help inform our
work for PRISMS; as a gesture of appreciation, focus group participants
will receive a copy of the NSTA best-seller, Uncovering Student Ideas in
Science: 25 Formative Assessment Probes.
If you would like to take part in this focus group discussion, please
contact Joyce Tugel at: jtugel@xxxxxxxx

Greetings, NSTA Board -
I'm going to be holding a focus group for one of my NSF-funded
projects at NSTA Salt Lake City (Thurs, Dec 7, 4pm). Last year, many
of you were a great help in spreading the word to middle school
science teachers (or educators who work directly with middle school
science teachers). The 45 minute session will be an engaging
discussion about ideas middle school science students struggle with,
and focus group participants will receive a copy of an NSTA
best-selling book. Please share the attached invitation with any
appropriate individuals or groups that are attending the NSTA
conference.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Hope to see you in Salt Lake City -
Best,
Joyce
