To: All Science Coordinators and teachers
The St. Louis Astronomical Society,
founded in 1936 and
dedicated to the promotion of astronomy, has completed the renovation
of its
12” f/8 Saunders Newtonian reflector telescope and now offers this fine
instrument to any school and/or district within the state of Missouri
or Illinois. Public and
private
institutions will be considered.
In return for receiving this telescope
as a donation from
the St. Louis Astronomical Society, the school must agree to house the
telescope in a permanent structure or observatory. The telescope will
require a
structure of at least 12’ long x 12’ wide x 10’ high.
As seen from the attached photographs,
the 12” telescope
includes a massive German equatorial mounting with motor drives on both
axis
and slow motion controls. The all steel base has precision leveling
feet to
provide proper leveling and alignment. The telescope will require one
110VAC
15A electrical circuit to operate.
The St. Louis Astronomical Society
will be taking donation
requests through June 30, 2007
and shall select the awarded school no later than Sept. 1, 2007. The St. Louis Astronomical
Society can
provide delivery and setup if requested.
Once the awarded institution has
completed the setup of the
permanent location and structure the St. Louis Astronomical Society can
provide
training and/or long-term support of the equipment if the site is
within
convenient driving distance.
