March 14-A Day to Celebrate Math and Science
It is said that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. And
perhaps it does if the lion has a wild mane like Einstein and the lamb
has a tail that seems to go on forever like pi. On March 14, in the
middle of the month when the lion and lamb meet, we celebrate Einstein
and the intriguing number pi. Why March 14? The date is Einstein's
birthday and it represents the common three-digit approximation for
pi-3.14.
Pi Day is a great day to have some fun with mathematics and science. Why
not plan a pi recitation contest followed by a pi eating contest? Make
your pies square, instead of round, since "pie are squared" is the
surface area bounded by a circle. For more Pi Day ideas, visit the "Math
with Mr. Herte" Web site, at http://www.mathwithmrherte.com/pi_day.htm,
or the Pi Day Resources page at
http://www.mobot.org/education/megsl/pi.html *.

In honor of Einstein, watch The Great Relativity Show, an award-winning
animation about his most famous theory, at
http://www.thegreatrelativityshow.com/, or visit the "Einstein
Explained" Web page, at http://www.abc.net.au/science/explore/einstein/.

Also, see http://pi.ytmnd.com/ that was posted a little earlier, from
the Math-Teach listserve [I do not have the date.]
